Circumstances: The Australian Federal Police report the circumstances of Melissa's disappearance to be "Melissa Brown was last seen in Adelaide on 13th May 2000 and was known to frequent truck stops and also hitch-hike. Melissa has not been seen or heard from since." Whilst technically true it is a profoundly inaccurate assessment of the circumstances of Melissa's disappearance.
Melissa along with her mother Rosemary Brown went missing on 13 May 2000.
On July 2, 2000 the body of Rosemary Brown was found in the Garden Island mangroves in Adelaide. It is believed Mrs Brown was strangled to death, but this has not been confirmed by police.
There remains no reason to assume that Melissa is dead.
In late 2000 Major Crime Investigation Unit, Acting Superintendent Bill Prior said: "We obviously have grave concerns about the whereabouts of Mrs Brown`s daughter, Melissa."

"....there is no evidence at this stage to suggest Melissa has been murdered," he said.

Rosemary Brown

Rosemary Brown is the murdered mother of missing teen Melissa Brown. Rosemary and Melissa went for a walk in the early hours of Saturday, May 13, 2000, Seven weeks later, the decomposing body of Rosemary, 33, was found in the Garden Island mangroves, her daughter Melissa has never been found.
Detective Senior Constable Jeff Brown said the case had been "frustrating" with virtually no leads since 2003.
"It is bewildering, somebody has to know something about the case." Sen-const Brown said. "We have exhausted all lines of inquiry since the case was reviewed in 2003, but it stills remains open.
"Rosemary mixed with a lot of people so if we can re-jog someone's memory it may help us (solve) it."
The Brown family had been living at the Windsor Gardens caravan park just weeks before they vanished. Rosemary and Melissa, then 15, had moved into a caravan in a friend's backyard at Blair Athol a short time befor they had disappeared.
Rosemary's son, Nathan Davidson, then 11, was staying with friends at Windsor Gardens. Where Rosemary and Melissa were going when they left their caravan at 2:30am remains unclear.
Rosemary's yellow bag was found at Northfield, about noon on the day of they went missing.
Rosemary's body was found in the North Arm of Port River, close to a jetty off Grand Trunkway, on July 2, 2000.
Melissa is described as being 162cm tall, of thin build, with dark shoulder-length hair and brown eyes. Sen-const Brown urged anyone with information to contact Crimestoppers.

New bid to find missing teacher

Carolyn Wilson, missing since April 2001. ALMOST a decade has passed since friends and family have heard from Mordialloc Secondary College teacher Carolyn Wilson.

The 66-year-old English and French teacher was last seen leaving her Camp Hill Rd, Somers, home on April 17, 2001, driving a green 1997 Daewoo Cielo sedan.

The mother-of-two called home three days later and spoke to her husband but did not say where she was or when she would return. Her credit card has not been used, her vehicle has never been found and she has not made any further contact with family or friends.

To coincide with Missing Persons Week, police last week renewed calls for information to help find Ms Wilson, described as a quiet woman with a small circle of friends.

Victoria Police Superintendent Murray Fraser said the first 24 to 48 hours in any missing person investigation were critical.

Of 7242 Victorians who went missing in the 2009/10 financial year, 6065 - almost 84 per cent - were found in the first 24 hours.

“In Victoria, you do not have to wait 24 hours before reporting a person as missing,” Supt Fraser said. “We really urge people to report their friends, family or loved ones missing as quickly as possible.

“In cases where people don’t wish to contact their family or friends, we ask them to report to a local police station - it’s one way to let family and friends know they’re OK without having to make direct contact or reveal where they are living.”

Jail term the start in hunt for truth

THE mother of Cairns teenager Angela Mealing, who died eight years ago, says the jailing of a former policeman who lied during the investigation is "just the beginning".

Adrian William Deemal, 48, has been sentenced to two years' jail after he was found guilty of perjury for lying during an investigation into Ms Mealing's disappearance.

He pleaded not guilty in the Brisbane District Court.

The 17-year-old was found on a bank of Behana Creek about 30km south of Cairns in 2000 - about six weeks after she disappeared on April 2.

Yesterday, Ms Mealing's mother, Jackie Shadforth, said she would never have closure, despite the sentence.

"I wish it (the sentence) could be longer," she said.

"When you lose a child, you never have closure.

"There are so many lies what he told that I'm going to pursue.

"All I can do is make those people who hurt her that night, to be charged."

In June 2000, Deemal gave evidence to a Queensland Crime Commission hearing and said he gave Ms Mealing a lift from Cairns south to Gordonvale on the morning she was reported missing.

Deemal told the hearing he had turned left into Riverstone Rd from the Bruce Highway and dropped Ms Mealing off about 100m from the intersection on April 2.

But the prosecution in the Brisbane District Court argued Deemal lied about his movements.

Prosecutor Brad Farr, SC, said security footage from a nearby service station did not show Deemal's car making the turn he claimed he made.

An inquest in 2002 heard the teenager was assaulted twice on the night she disappeared by a group of girls at Mooroobool and later by her boyfriend at Earlville.

Ms Shadforth yesterday she would rest "for a while" before continuing her battle for justice.

"Everyone who laid a hand on Angie, I won't give up," she said.

"I cannot replace her. I will always have a broken heart.

"All my life I've been able to fix things. But I can't fix nothing. I can't bring her back to me," she said.

Deemal's sentence will be suspended after a year.

Debbie's life was taken at the young age of 24yrs, she had her whole life ahead of her. Her charred remains were found in the front seat of a burnt out white Ford Laser vehicle registration KA6594 at a shopping centre in Dance Drive, Middle Swan at approximately 12.26am. 25 January 2000. Various questions remain unanswered about the death of Debbie and her movements on the day of  her death.










Further Information:: Debbie had been out from England approximately 6 months and was staying with her father and his partner in Perths northern suburb of Woodvale. Debbie was studying to become a chef at the Australian School of Tourism and Hospitality and had plans of opening her own restaurant one day.

Debbie loved animals and told her father on the morning of 24th January 2000 her plans were to go to Perth Zoo that day. Her first stop 9.40am was at the ATM machine at the intersection of Trappers and Timberlane Drive, Woodvale to withdraw some money. Her movements from there until the discovery of her charred remains at 12.26am remained unknown.

Police baffled by her death at the time, trying to piece together the final movements of Debbie to determine whether it was murder, suicide or accident. Midland Senior Detective Rick Weskin said “they were treating the death as suspicious and said it hasn't been downgraded to an accidental or suicide-type death and it certainly hasn't been upgraded to a homicide investigation at this stage.”

Detectives were not able to establish whether she had travelled to South Perth. Police initially interviewed people and set up mobile police facility vans at the Woodvale and Middle Swan shopping centres, posters of Debbie were placed in various locations.

A few months later new forensic evidence revealed the white Ford Laser with registration KA6594 she had borrowed from a family friend had travelled to Geraldton and back on the day that her charred remains were found. Police did country runs to Geraldton and back stopping at all the roadhouses along Brand Highway to Geraldton then taking a different route travelled back to Perth along Brand Highway/Great Northern Highway to see if anyone had sighted Debbie on that day.

With so many unanswered questions relting to Deborahs movements on the day and the distance that the vehicle she was driving had traveled it is difficult to see this death as anything other than murder.

Psychic called to help solve mysterious death

A Clarkson woman desperate to solve the mysterious death of her niece, who was found burnt in a car 11 years ago, has called on a British psychic.

Kathleen Cox said the inquiry into Deborah Michelle Anderson's death was "gathering dust" so she turned to Diane Lazarus as her "private investigator".
The 24-year-old's remains were found by firefighters when they attended a blazing Ford Laser at Middle Swan shopping centre about 12.20am on January 25, 2000.
Ms Anderson, a student chef, came from England to live with her father in mid-1999. She had borrowed the car from her father's partner almost 15 hours earlier to go to Perth Zoo. Mrs Cox believes her niece was murdered, although police said they could not rule out an accident, perhaps that Ms Anderson fell asleep in the car while smoking. Police were unable to work out what Ms Anderson had done between leaving Woodvale and being found in Middle Swan. Forensics had shown that the car went to Geraldton and back that day, although Ms Anderson had no links to the town.
Ms Anderson's mother, Maureen Morris, died in England in 2003 and her sister, Mrs Cox, promised not to rest until she found out what happened. Mrs Cox conceded some people had had awful experiences with charlatan psychics but she believed Ms Lazarus was gifted. Ms Lazarus admitted she did not always find the answers. "If it brings lights on, in the sense it gets publicity for that person so the police reinvestigate, that's good enough," she said.
Mrs Cox urged anyone with any information to come forward.

Crime proceeds fiasco imperils Kalgoorlie hotel blow-ins Chris Thomson

A Kalgoorlie hotel frozen under proceeds of crime legislation, then gutted by a suspected arson attack, has become a public safety risk as authorities squabble over who should secure and repair it.
The office of WA's Director of Public Prosecutions yesterday confirmed police froze the pub from sale in 2003 when co-owner Kevin Ross Smith was charged with drug dealing. For four years between then and when Smith was finally convicted in March 2007, the hotel's ownership fell into limbo.
DPP spokeswoman Diana Callander said her agency could not legally confiscate The Foundry until Smith's conviction, and that as soon as he was sentenced the DPP had moved to impound the pub.
However, a suspected arson attack on July 3 last year caused $500,000 to damage to the hotel, which Ms Callander said had reduced the asset's worth to land value only.
"It was worth less than the rates and mortgage owing on the property at the time," Ms Callander said.
"So, in November last year, because there was no money in it for us, we withdrew the confiscation order."
Smith's company, Headframe Service Pty Ltd, is now deregistered, and the pub is derelict, prompting Kalgoorlie-Boulder mayor Ron Yuryevich to slam the Government for not fencing and fixing the hotel earlier.
"It was an unsafe building and no-one was willing to take action on it," he said.
"It's not good enough and where they have this legislation, someone has to be responsible."
Mr Yuryevich said The Foundry's long-term ownership limbo meant his council was powerless to move in and fence the hotel.
"We could have tried to take the State to court, I spose, but there was no end in sight in doing that," he said.
"They should be able to carry out repairs and ensure as a responsible owner it is safe for the community."
WA Police, which had originally slapped the sale freeze on the hotel, and firefighters, have complained to the council that officers have been injured when attending the ramshackle property.
Police and firies complain the pub's open access, and unsecured iron sheeting on site, are putting the Kalgoorlie community at risk.
Ms Callander said the pub's condition was not her agency's concern because the Government had never owned it.
"It's not our responsibility that it's a safety risk," she said.
"The hotel was a dump even before (Smith) was charged.
"It was riddled with white ant and there were people illegally living in the hotel - they were vagrants, I spose."
The hotel, on Boulder Road, has a chequered past.
It once doubled as the headquarters for the Kalgoorlie chapter of the Club Deroes bikie gang.
Missing 28-year-old woman Lisa Govan was last seen near the pub's bottleshop in October 1999. She has never been found and detectives fear she was murdered.
Mayor Yuryevich's council estimates fencing and boarding up The Foundry will cost $10,000. The city will soon serve a notice on defunct Headframe Service Pty Ltd to demand the work be done.
If a response is not received, the council says it will secure the site itself and take action to recover costs.
