Glenyce Rae McGowan

Below is a Press Release From Police Minister John Day Released by The Liberal Party 4/8/97 printed in its entirety The mysterious disappearance of a young Perth woman nearly 22 years ago will be a major focus during a week-long campaign by police to find missing persons in Western Australia. Police Minister John Day said the local campaign was part of National Missing Persons Week which was an important opportunity for local police to help solve 69 cases of missing persons still outstanding in WA. "Somewhere in the community there are people who do have the answers to what happened to these missing persons," Mr Day said. "I urge them to come forward with any information in which to help police locate these people. "This year police will be mounting displays of various unsolved cases in shopping centres throughout the State in the hope that someone will come forward with details of an unsolved case. "People can help police unravel a mystery and still remain anonymous by calling Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000." Mr Day said one mysterious case in WA still unresolved was the disappearance of Glenyce Rae McGowan from the Nanutarra Roadhouse, 370kms north of Carnarvon in December 1975. Glenyce was making her way to Mt Tom Price from Perth when she was forced to camp at the roadhouse overnight because of local flooding. The following morning she was missing. Mr Day said the Missing Persons Bureau would use the high profile campaign to distribute an age enhanced photograph of Glenyce in the hope someone may recognise her and inform police. WA's Missing Persons Bureau receive an average of about 3300 reports of missing persons each year - with 60 per cent of these being previously unrecorded cases. The Bureau has a 98 per cent success rate of locating all reported missing persons. Mr Day said the Missing Persons Bureau would be promoting National Missing Persons Week at the following shopping centres: August 4 Perth City; August 5 Rockingham; August 6 Joondalup; August 7 Carousel; August 8 Midland; and - August 9 Morley Galleria.
